Surpassing Knowledge?

In a recent Bible study, we discussed Ephesians 3:19, which says “to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God”.

At first glance it seems slightly confusing that Paul is praying for the Ephesians to “know” and then in the same breath say that it is something that “surpasses knowledge”.

John Calvin’s commentary on Job is helpful when he writes this: “we have to close our eyes because we cannot comprehend the secrets which are contained in [God’s works]”. And on knowledge of God, he continues, “We will know only in part, but that knowledge will still be enough for us because nothing that is good and appropriate for our salvation will be kept from us.”

In paraphrasing Calvin’s conclusion on our ability to know things about God, there are some matters that are incomprehensible, but God’s secret counsel is much too exalted for us, causing us to walk in reverence and humility.

This site is a collection of my commentary on theology, current events, and everyday blue collar life. My primary purpose is to share my own personal studies in the Scriptures and to show how the Bible has been changing my life. The content here is meant to be an encouragement to my brothers and sisters in Christ: to view everything through the lens of God’s Word, for the Scriptures are what shapes our thinking and governs our behavior.
