At the corner of College Avenue and 2nd Street in Beaver PA stands the beautiful house that was once the home of Matthew Stanley Quay. He was a U.S. Senator from 1887 to 1900, becoming very influential in the Republican party. He was the chairman of the Republican National Committee and worked on Benjamin Harrison’s presidential campaign in 1888. Quay had a reputation as a potent leader, controlling the political machine by whichever means necessary. Prior to his political career, he was a Colonel in the U.S. Army and received the Medal of Honor for his bravery in the Battle of Fredericksburg. Quay resided at this location from 1884 to 1904. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
