Genealogy>Mark Ort>Jack Ort>Carl Adam Schultz>Adam Schultz
Adam Schultz was born on April 13, 1857 at Brady’s Bend, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Adam Schultz who came to Armstrong County from Germany in about 1855. The younger Adam’s mother, Catherine (Hill) Schultz died when he was a child and his father died in 1872.
Adam was the fourth in a family of five children, and when he was twelve years old, he began working in an iron furnace at Brady’s Bend. He continued working there until he was sixteen years old. He moved to Millerstown in January 1874, where he found employment with H. L. Westermann, clerking and delivering goods. He remained with Mr. Westermann until December 13, 1888, when he purchased an interest in the firm of P. G. Frederick & Company, a planing mill and lumber dealer. A record of Adam’s business appeared in the Butler Eagle newspaper in October 15, 1909, which listed his firm as ‘Frederick and Schultz’.
On May 6, 1879, he married Magdalena Franck, a native of Alsace, Germany, who came to the United States in 1871. They were members of St. Paul’s German Lutheran Church of Millerstown, where Adam was a deacon.
In the late 1800’s, many catastrophic fires damaged Millerstown and so the fire company was re-organized in an effort to be more effective in the event of an emergency. Adam Schultz became one of the foremen in this re-organization.
Adam Schultz had a son on September 17, 1884 and named him Carl Adam Schultz. However, Carl was not the son of Magdalena. The details are not known of this relationship, but Magdalena’s sister, Charlotta, was the mother of Carl. Charlotta was 22 years old when Carl was born.
Adam passed away at his office on January 7, 1927 of what appears to be a heart attack, possibly caused by high blood pressure, according to his certificate of death. He is buried at the top of the hill at the Hemphill Cemetery just south of Chicora, Pennsylvania.
According to the obituary that appeared in the Butler Eagle newspaper on January 13, 1927, his wife remained faithful to him and preceded him in death by almost six years. The writing goes on to say that he entered into active membership with St. Paul’s church in 1886 and continued his service until the time of his death. It appears that God had done a great work in his life: he was recognized as honest, faithful and reliable, and someone who realized what it meant to be a steward over spiritual and material trusts. The obituary states that he had learned to bear hardships in his early life as a hero.
