The Strand Theater is a beautiful architectural accent piece to the quaint town of Zelienople PA. According to the theater’s website, it was built in 1914 by Italian immigrants Gioachino and Rosalia Sapienza. At first, the building was partially a fruit market and partially a small stage that featured silent films and Vaudeville-style performances.

In 1939, the building was renovated in order to use strictly as a theater. It became a popular movie house and entertainment center for decades. But then, with the advent of the Multiplex-style theaters and easy access to videos, The Strand closed its doors in the early 80’s. It fell into disrepair having been neglected for the 25 years it was closed.
An initiative to restore the theater was set into motion in the early 2000’s, and in July 2009 The Strand Theater re-opened to the public after nearly a year of rebuilding. Currently, the theater hosts classic movie nights, concerts and standup comedy acts.
