Stoystown Mural
On the Lincoln Highway near Stoyston, PA in Somerset County (near the junction of Routes 30 and 219), artist Wayne Fettro from Central Pennsylvania painted this mural depicting Abraham Lincoln. Next to the President is a Conastoga Wagon with its driver and brakeman. The third picture in the mural is Amanda Preuss, who was the first woman to drive the whole way from San Francisco to New York on the Lincoln Highway. She is driving a 1916 Oldsmobile and it took just over 11 days to go 3,520 miles, part of which was straight through Pennsylvania on this stretch of road. The last picture is Henry Ford, celebrating the manufacturing of the 10 millionth Ford.

Schellsburg Mural
The Bison Coral Barn near Schellsburg PA on the Lincoln Highway was also painted by muralist Wayne Fettro. The Burma Shave phrase, “Times Square in the east, Golden Gate in the west, for cross country travel, it was the best, Lincolnway!” is painted on the west side of the barn.

On the side adjacent to Route 30 appears a mural of three men surrounding a 1930’s automobile, looking out over the scenic overlook at the site of the former S.S. Grand View Point Hotel, which was also along the Lincoln Highway near Bedford. A painted photograph of the hotel lists its elevation as 2465 feet. The Historic 1806 Log Church is also displayed on this side of the barn.
The east side pictures two vintage autos passing each other on the highway as they drive by a field of grazing cattle.

Fettro was commissioned to paint over a dozen murals that are visible from the storied Lincoln Highway. The goal of the projects was to depict life along the highway, integrating each town’s historical significance and personality.
